On March 3, 2022 the ownership of the former Teal Lake Medical Clinic was transitioned to Great Lakes Recovery Centers in the spirit of strengthening community-based recovery and behavioral health care. The 33,000 sq. ft. building was previously owned by UP Health Systems – Bell and sits on approximately three acres of land. The facility is conveniently located just off of U.S. 41 in Negaunee, adjacent to GLRC’s Adolescent Services Center. Together, the two buildings sit on 32 acres of land and will allow for a full campus model of care.
To meet the growing needs of our communities, GLRC will relocate the women’s residential treatment program, including social detox, to the new Teal Lake location, thereby expanding residential capacity in the region. A recovery house will also be located on the campus, allowing women to continue their life of sobriety after residential treatment. Children will be able to stay with their mothers in both the residential treatment program and recovery house, with on-site specialized childcare while the mothers are in treatment.
GLRC's integrated medical care services began operating out of the Teal Lake facility in the spring of 2022. Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services, along with both mental health and substance abuse outpatient counseling for all ages, were brought to the Teal Lake facility shortly after that. GLRC's Access Center is currently located at the facility, serving as the first point of contact to individuals seeking any of GLRC services. This campus model will allow clients to benefit from increased integrated care opportunities as services will be accessed in one location.
The Teal Lake facility will be renamed the John Kivela Center in memory of former State Representative John Kivela who passed away in 2017. John had a passion for serving the people of the U.P. and his legacy will live on in the new facility.
The transition of the former Teal Lake Medical Clinic from UP Health Systems in 2022 was instrumental in GLRC’s realization of their vision to create a regional behavioral health campus. Although portions of the building were ready for almost immediate occupancy, significant renovations need to be completed to fully transform the 33,000 square-foot facility into a regional behavioral health campus. We are thankful for the design work of architect John Larson and builder Dan Arbic. Dan Arbic Construction was able to begin renovations of the Teal facility in January of 2023. Watch this page for renovation progress information.
